The mountain dulcimer is one of the very few instruments to have been developed in the United States. Used since pioneer times to play a body of traditional music including dance tunes, ballads and hymns this instrument remained in relative obscurity until Kentucky folk musician Jean Ritchie introduced it to the urban folk scene in the 1940's where it captured a whole new audience. In this fun, intense, fast paced six week course the student will be introduced to a number of playing styles, from traditional noter playing to more contemporary chord style playing. You Will Learn:
By the time the six weeks are over you’ll have learned many of the traditional songs that have been played on the mountain dulcimer for generations: Ground Hog; Old Joe Clarke and many more. you will also be introduced to the many books and learning materials that will enable you to continue on your own after the class. Instructor for the class is Fritz Schuler This class will meet 5:45 PM Until 6:45 Pm 8 Thursdays January 17-24-31.February 7-14-21 Open to students 20 years of age or older, the cost of this six week course is $100.00 payable on or before 1/6/08. LATE ENROLLMENTS AFTER that date will be $125.00. Fill out the enrollment blank completely (HERE) and and send it along with a check. We encourage you to enroll as early as possible. Sending a check will reserve your spot in the course. YOUR CHECK WILL NOT BE CASHED UNTIL 1/6/08 REFUNDS: Refunds, when requested by mail, will be honored up until 1/06/08, after that no refunds or credits (for tuition or rental) will be made for any reason. We also reserve the right to cancel courses because of insufficient enrollment and completely refund tuition.
YOU WILL NEED a good easy to play 3 or 4 string mountain dulcimer that can be tuned easily. (Please: NO friction tuner dulcimers or “First Act” instruments. ) If you have any questions on the suitability of your dulcimer please bring it in BEFORE you enroll! Instructor for the Adult Folk Courses Is Fritz Schuler. Schuler has taught folk guitar, banjo and mountain dulcimer through the University of Wisconsin's Continuing Education program for nearly 30 years at UW - Fox Valley in Appleton. He has also taught these courses at the UW Centers in Fond Du Lac, Sheboygan, Green Bay, West Bend and Manitowoc as well as The Golden Ring in Manitowoc, passing along his joy of playing to close to 2000 students. He has taught mini-courses in the history of American Folk music at several high schools, in-service programs for teachers, and a master's class in the History of American Folk Music at the John Michael Kohler Art's Center in Sheboygan. He has also taught a Folk Instruments In the Classroom workshop at Silver Lake College and is a performer of traditional American Folk Music
